Nationals!!!

Last week, the Spartans all travled to Missouri to run the Homeschool National Championship XC meet!!! It was amazingly fun! On Friday morning, we all met at a church in New Albany. Olivia and I rode with our good friends, Martha and Margaret. Kirsten also rode with them!

On the seven hour drive there, we had SO MUCH FUN!! It went by so quickly when we were laughing with friends. Martha and Margaret's Daddy, Mr. Steve told us some hillarious stories. Whenever someone said something funny, I tried to write it in my journal.

When we arrived at the course, we were all ready to run after being in the car for so long! We all jogged the course together, and I began to get very nervous when I saw another hill....and another hill...and another hill.

Tht night at the hotel, we were divided into groups of who will stay in which room. I was in a room with Olivia, Martha, and Claire!! Later we found out that Coach Heather had seven girls in her room!! We told her to send someone else in our room, so Hannah also stayed with us! Claire, Martha, and I all slept the longer way on the bed, so that all three of us could fit. That night Coach Heather came to pray with us an tell us goodnight. Later she came back and slept with us as well!

The next morning, as we were getting ready we were all freezing! So Martha turned the air up to 90 degrees!!! We were very warm after that. While waiting in the lobby, Hannah handed out super cute ribbons, blue and pink sparkly, and ribbon with colorful running shoes! Coach Heather talked to us and we were off to the course!!

Thankfully, the Varsity girl's race was first, so I had little time to be nervous. We all gathered around and Coach Heather gave us more encouragement, and Danielle prayed. Then we were off! From the start, it was a very painful race! I don't remember much except hoping that I would be done very, very soon! I was fifth to finish on our team, and nineteenth over all. Our team got third place.

All the other Spartans ran a wonderful race. Danielle got fourth over all, and Clay and Andrew got second and third in their race! Hannah and Sarah both got PRs! And the Varsity boys did great as well.

Overall, it was a great experience, and I hope we get to go back next year!

First Day of School!

Today was the first day of school :)

I am starting ninth grade- I'm in highschool! I really like all of my subjects so far...but I'm sure they'll get old very soon. I am mostly excited about Biology, writing, and geography.

This morning we had our traditional treasure hunt that went all over the house, and all outside! Our surprise was a smoothie from Smoothie King! They were delicious =)

This is Mama's first year with all five of us in school- Sam is in Kindergarten!!! I can't believe he's going to learn to read this year.

I can't wait to can a bunch of tomatoes this afternoon with Mama and Olivia for Home Ec.!

Today I am starting the Bible in 90 Days challenge. Mama has done it once before, and is starting today also. She really enjoyed it the first time, so I decided to try it! I am going to read it on my Kindle, which is the Amercian Standard Version. I'll try to post more about it later!

Autumn tagged me- thanks! Ok, so here are seven things you might not have known about me... 1) My older sister Olivia, and I do almost everything together! We both love to do pretty much the same things, so we're always crocheting or sewing together. Even though we each have our own rooms, Olivia and I sleep with each other every night. We take turns sleeping in each bed, a week in my room, a week in Olivia's room, and I have never been away from Olivia for more than one night until last year. She went to a winter church camp and was gone for three nights. 2) I also spend a lot of time with my other siblings also. A lot of times when Olivia and I are in one of our rooms crocheting, Leah, Clay or Sam (or all three) will come in and just be crazy. Almost everyday Clay, Leah, Sam, and I will go outside and play together, whether it's tag in the back yard or Indians in the woods :) 3) When I was younger I wanted to be a doctor, nurse, teacher, ballet teacher, police woman, and fire fighter. I planned on doing each for a day and rotating them. 4) Recently I have been sewing a lot. I got some really neat sewing books for Christmas, and Mama is helping me make a dress for Olivia out of one of them. I also just sewed a pillow case dress for my friend's Mama, who is actually due to have her baby on Olivia's birthday! (in five days!) Leah also really likes to sew, and often asks me to give her 'sewing lessons'. She can sew very well though. 5) I have been trying to learn sign lanugage. I can say the alphabet, "My name is", friend, God, Jesus, Saivor, and Lord. I am still trying to learn some more! 6) I love to sing hymns. Whenever I get together with my friends, we always sing hymns. It is so pretty with all the different parts. Olivia, Leah, and I also like to sing together. 7) My birthday is in 89 days... LOL! I'm running out of ideas

I have been trying different recipes for bread ever since we got back from running camp (August 2010), hoping that I would find the perfect recipe that I could bake all the time. (so we could stop buying store-bought bread) I tried several different recipes and they all turned out either too dry, too flat, or burnt (which really had nothing to do with the actual recipe...;)
So Mama told me about the bread machine she had gotten for a wedding present! I tried oatmeal bread, potato bread, and I think two different kinds of whole wheat bread. The bread machine was very easy and quick to use, but I wanted to try one more bread recipe.
I proofed the yeast (which I have never done before) and did my favorite part- kneading! The whole process was a lot of trouble, and after I finally put the bread in the oven, I told Olivia that I would not be making that bread again!
The bread cooled and I cut a piece for Olivia and I to try. We immediately decided that it was much better than the machine bread, and I declared that it was worth all that trouble! I brought some to Mama and Clay. They also agreed. Mama said that she was not going to buy any more bread!
The recipe is called "Delicious Whole Wheat Loaves" and it is rightly named!

Winter Run Soup

I got this recipe from a monthly running magazine we get, my favorite part of it every month is the nutrition article! A while back I got a great recipe for healthy ice cream (Olivia posted the recipe on her blog) This is a soup recipe that Daddy saw in this month's magazine, and thought it looked good!
So, I just put it in the crock pot for supper tonight...I hope it's good, because I froze enough turkey to make it two more times!
Ingredients-
1 pound uncooked ground turkey breast
1 cup chopped celery
1/2 cup thinly sliced carrots (I put them in the food processor instead)
48 oz tomato juice (it called for much less, but it was too thick)
1 14 oz frozen French cut green beans
1 cup fresh mushrooms, sliced 1/4 inch thick
1/2 cup chopped fresh tomato
1 1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon dried basil, crushed
1 teaspoon dried oregano, crushed
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 bay leaf
Directions-
In a large skillet, cook the turkey, celery, and carrots until turkey is cooked though, drain. Add to a 3 1/2- 4 quart crock pot. Stir in tomato juice, green beans, mushrooms, tomato, dried basil. oregano, garlic powder, sugar, pepper, and bay leaf. Cover and cook on low-heat setting for six hours. Remove and discard bay leaf. Makes four to six servings.

Leah and Sam have been sick for a few days, and we just found out it was the flu! Daddy and Olivia went grocery shopping, and Olivia collected all the groceries while Daddy did a few other errands. The only thing she could find was a three pound package of ground turkey, so I cooked the turkey, carrots, and celery in a HUGE pot, and I'm freezing two thirds of it. Mama thought it might be good to use the meat in spaghetti! Yum!

I haven’t posted in so long! It seems like whenever I finally do post, I just post about random things that have happened! I don’t have anything big to post about! I was going to post the paper I wrote about the St. Jude, but somehow the document got lost and I’ll have to type the whole thing again! I’ll try to get that up soon.
Leah and I have been sewing a LOT. Our grandmother gave us some new sewing supplies for Christmas (we has the Christmas party for my Mama’s side of the family this weekend) so we have been sewing purses and aprons! We made four Christmas aprons for the four girls in our family to do Christmas baking in, which we started today. Leah and I made SEVEN boxes of oyster crackers to give out to family at the Christmas party we’re hosting tomorrow, for Daddy’s side of the family. I think Mama said that about 60 people come! It’s a lot of fun to go in the woods or to the barn in the dark during the party. Usually Olivia, Clay, and I go with our older cousins. It is so much fun! I can’t wait. I need to post pics of the Christmas presents I’ve already given…I’ll post them if I can find my camera cord!!!

I haven't posted in so long! I have been pretty busy with school and running :)

Today Olivia, Daddy and I ran 13 miles! It went by way quicker than I thought it would. We ran on Chickasaw trails, and I LOVE running on trails. This Saturday it will be two weeks until St. Jude! I am soooooooo excited. I'm going to run with Coach Duley and Daddy! Daddy is running the full marathon, but we will run with him until around 12 miles, where the marathon runners go right, and the half marathon runners go left to the finish line!

I can't believe it is ONE week until Thanksgiving! It seems like it was just yesterday that it was Christmas and new year. I am finishing my Christmas presents the earliest I ever have this year! I only lack four presents :)

XC is Over :(

Well, XC season 2010 is over :(. The end of the season party is always a lot of fun, but also very sad! We played tag, capture the flag, ate pizza, and a lot more! I had so much fun with my friends, as always. The Spartan girls got together and have been working on an afghan for Coach Duley since XC camp in August! We didn't have as much time to make one for Coach Cobb, but we made her a matching scarf and earwarmer. All the girls made squares for each and we sewed them together. For Coach Duley, I crocheted her a chicken and a thread- crocheted cross. For Coach Cobb I made a lap blanket. She said she might use it as a baby blanket too since she's sure she's having a girl :). Unfortunately, I don't have pictures of any of these things! The Duley girls spent the night with us so they could run the Race for The Cure, and we were so busy wrapping presents and making cards that we forgot about pictures! At the Race for the Cure I got my best time of the season--20:32!!! Almost all the Spartans got awards, and everyone had a great race!

Easy and Yummy Breakfast

One morning Mama went running with her friends so Olivia and I babysat our siblings. They all wanted eggs for breakfast, but Mama doesn't like us cooking or baking when she's not around. I then remembered Mama telling me how to make eggs in the microwave! I cracked an egg in a coffee cup and microwaved it for 1 minute. Leah and Sam loved it! Clay begged to explode an egg in the mircrowave, but we didn't let him, LOL!

Sorry! I've been sewing, crocheting, and baking! I've made the banana bread from Cassia's blog twice, and lots of oatmeal and whole wheat bread! Right now I have beans in the crock pot for bean burritos tonight! I can't wait to see how they turn out.

Saturday our XC team went to Jackson, TN to run the Union University meet. It was a nice, flat course and a lot of our team made PRs! (personal records) I got my best time of the year, but it was still a full minute behind my best time! Oh well, maybe next time! I'll try to get some pictures up but they're on Daddy's camera...so maybe I can figure out how to get them on here! Everyone have a great Tuesday!

Recipe tag!

The rules are to post your favorite (or one of your favorites) recipe, then tag someone!
Mine is half whole wheat muffins
Mix:
1 cup all-purpose flour*
¾ cup whole wheat flour
1/3 cup sugar
2 tsp baking powder
¼ tsp salt
In a separate bowl, mix-
1 egg
¾ cup milk
¼ cup cooking oil
Add the two mixtures together just until moistened, add any of the following:
½ cup chocolate chips
¾ cup blueberries
2/3 cup cranberries (also ad 2 additional TBS sugar)
Fold in any extras, and spoon into muffin tins. Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes until golden.
**You could do 1 ¾ cup all-purpose four, or 1 ¾ cup whole wheat, but this is a nice healthy balence!

Happy Birthday Mama!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAMA!!!
This morning Mama Ran with Daddy and her friends, so Sam woke me up at 6:00! We immediately got to work though :). We brought all the presents we wrapped to the upstairs and decorated the table. Poor Mama always gets leftover plates and napkins and things because we always forget about those things until the day of! We did find some very pretty and brightly colored plates from Olivia's birthday, and hung up a paper lantern above the table. We all did our chores and made sure the kitchen was clean. I finished crocheting the shrug I made for Mama...it was already finished but too small so I had to make some adjustments this morning. Olivia made pancakes for breakfast, and I made brownies. Mama doesn't really like cake so I made her some brownies! We will probably sing to Mama and eat brownies tonight or this afternoon. When she came home from running we all hid and when she came up the stairs we yelled "SURPRISE!" (and scared her!) and sang Happy Birthday. Sam actually sang
"Happy birthday to you, you live in a zoo, you smell like a monkey, and you look like one too!" Later on Leah was singing
"Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you, you smell like a runner, and you look like one too!" LOL.

Last night some after church our family and some friends changed clothes after services and walked across the street to play volley ball! I cannot play or understand ANY sport that has a ball in it, so Olivia and I were just watching. Since I can't even understand the sport, I got a little bored. Olivia had the briliant idea for us to go run! It was so nice and cool, the only problem was we didn't have any shoes! When we asked Mama, and she said yes we decided to run barefoot! It was so nice to run in the cool grass without any shoes. We ran all over Veterans park, chatting the whole time. We aren't sure what our exact distance was, but we think around 4 miles. It was pretty dark, so once we turned down a trail that wasn't lit, and had a scare! There was a tree, but in the dark I thought it was a huge scarecrow, and it scared me half to death when I first saw it! Surprisingly I'm not even sore from running with no shoes! I could tell that my form was different, but I didn't hurt anywhere. Barefoot running is awesome!!!!

Carolina's Journal

Again, I haven't posted any more of this in a long time! I'm out of ideas for things to happen in the story, so please comment and give me some ideas!! This is all I've come up with since last time :)

Today Bethel and I took Max to the creek again, and gathered more flowers to press. I am going to use the ones I’ve already pressed for Mrs. Carrie’s card, but I also want to have the other ones for more things later. Mother said that Mrs. Carrie will have her baby any day now! I wonder if it’s a boy or a girl. Mrs. Carrie thinks it’s a boy, Mr. David told us, but he thinks it’s a girl. I wonder who’s right. Tomorrow we are having a spelling bee and I’m very nervous about it! I need to study. The first place prize is a book called Pilgrim’s Progress and the second place prize is a new pair of pencils, and third place is some hard candy. I would love to get any of the prizes, so I’m really going to go study now!

Today was the spelling bee. I got third place! I missed the word phalange. See, I know how to spell it now! I gave some of my candy to Bethel, who won first place and she said I could read her book as soon as she’s done. We broke up the candy into smaller pieces for Max, and he was delighted. Jesse Harris got second place, and I was so surprised he didn’t win! Bethel surprised me, but I’m sure it’s because she studies so well. Tomorrow night I get to stay the night with Bethel! I’m very excited. We have decided to stay up all night! I need to get to bed because tomorrow I have school.

Last night Bethel and I wanted to stay up all night and see the sunrise, but we fell asleep. We were talking so much that Bethel’s mama made us go outside! We brought our blankets and we thought being outside was just lovely! We looked at all the stars and I showed Bethel the big dipper, and she showed me Orion. The next thing I knew it was morning and we were still outside! Mrs. Lars said that she came out to check on us, but we were fast asleep so she didn’t wake us up. I’m really tired now so I’m going to take a nap!

BMC 5k

Today was a WONDERFUL run!!!!! It was a hard course, with a lot of hills and a little bit of gravel, but overall it was WONDERFUL!!! After every hill and turn I had a chance to surge, so that's a LOT! my time was 21:43 which is my BEST time of the year!!! And it's only the first race of the season!!!!! The fastest boy on our team, Forrest WON THE WHOLE RACE!!!!!!! HE WAS FIRST BY LIKE 20 SECONDS!!! The whole team was sooooooo proud of him when he went to get his award, we were practically screaming at the top of our lungs!! Usually the middle mile is hard for me, but what helped me soooooooooooooooooo much was that it was a turn around and I could see my team mates. It distracted me and helped me get through the middle mile. I was smiling the WHOLE middle mile when usually I'm DYING!!! At the finish there was a big hill, and it was tough but once I saw the clock I ran as fast as I could because I wanted to break 22 SO bad! Today was a perfect way to start off another season!

When Olivia and I went to BMC camp we had healthy snacks everyday, and in our booklets we had the recipes. This was my favorite!

Homemade granola
5 cups oats
1/2 cup dry milk
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup oil
1/3 cup honey (sometimes a bit more)
Mix together, spread on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 325 degrees for about 10 minutes. Stir. Cook another 5 minutes. Allow granola to cool on pan. Once cool, you can add raisins, nuts, wheat germ, coconut, ect. and store in an airtight container.

Last time I made it I put some nuts in the food processer to break them up slightly, and mixed them in! I loved it, but Olivia requested that I not put in the nuts next time. Since Olivia and I are the only ones who eat the granola, I'd better not put nuts in next time lol! It's still delicious without any of the extras =)

This is an observation I had to write for school. I observed Sam in the barn....this was before the snake!!!

My brother Sam is a little man. He is always eager to help, and to him, work is play.

"This is how you do it kid, aim," Sam felt so big by telling Leah how to do something.

His little sweaty body thrust all it's weight into throwing that small stone. With a grunt Sam hurled the stone into the woods, caught his breath, and threw again.

After finishing his strenuous task, Sam cheerfully skipped along to toil some more.

Sam is the little boy who knows he is really a little man.

Snake!!

I just had the scariest moment of my life!!!!!! I was in our old barn with my little sister who is six and my brother who is 4. I was sweeping it out and making a little "house" for Leah and Sam. We have a big stack of wood in the corner of our barn so I was getting some out to make little rooms, when out comes a HUGE (well, it seemed huge to me at the time) black snake! My first reflex was to scream at the top of my lungs! The snake was between me and Leah and Sam, so they ran out the door and I had to choice but to climb up the ladder. I threw down the cooler and notebooks out of the barn window, then I jumped out of the barn window which is about nine feet off the ground! All this happened about 15 minutes ago and my heart is still racing!!!!!

Baking, Sewing, and Crocheting

That's pretty much what I've been doing all week! And school, of course....=). I have been baking bread so much lately that I've used all the flour! I am still experimenting with recipes, and I still haven't found one that works for me! My favorite one that I've made so far is the whole wheat sour dough bread, even though it doesn't taste sour!

Olivia somehow found a website called Hugs for Homeless Animals. We have both decided to do the Suggles Project. I have crocheted one and a half blankets, and sewn three. They don't have to be any exact size and it's ok if they don't turn out perfectly, so this was a great project for me. We will donate these Snuggle blankets to our local Animal Shelter. They are just little soft blankets to comfort the animals, and for them to have something to snuggle with instead of being in a hard, cold pin. I'll try to post pictures of the ones I've made soon!

Wow, what a busy summer! All through the school year I think "I'll get to post more in the summer" but summer has just flown by, it has been SO busy! Today was the dreaded first day of school! It was actually way better than I thought though. I have a Christian based science and history, and I love it! Since I am doing history with Clay, and Mama has a lot of read aloud books, I didn't get done as soon as I normally would. I did have a little bit of free time in between finishing my independant work and working with Mama and Clay. Also today I made some homemade bread! They were supposed to be apple cinnamon rolls, but after the first batch didn't really work, I made the second into bread. The cinnamon rolls will be heated up in the morning for a yummy breakfast, and the bread is going to be served with supper! I am also making sourdough bread, my starter just hasn't soured yet! I'll have to try to post about that and the bagels I want to try soon! I hope everyone had a GREAT Monday!!!

AT LAST!!!!!! It is misshapen, but all that matters is it's warm, but mostly it's DONE!!! It is longer than I am tall, making it the BIGGEST thing I've ever made!!! I am soooooooooooo happy that it's done, and I'm not giving it away! It is the family's and (hopefully) someday I will pass it down to my kids (in a looooooong time!!!) What do you think?!?!

I had a WONDERFUL 13th birthday! We stayed home all day (until supper) and swam and played games! We even played Guestures in the pool, which was LOTS of fun! For my table decoration Mama surprised me with a Snow cone theme!!! The snow cones were so much fun to make and eat! Today Mama and I got a pedicure. For supper on my birthday we went to a Hibachi grill. It is so much fun to watch the man cook your food! Sam was very concerned about "when the fire was going to come". We actually went there for my birthday last year, and Sam remembered well! He ended up ducking under the table!! Go to Mama's blog for pictures!

Jalapenos!

Since I had a lot of jalapenos from my garden (and Olivia's!) I decided to make stuffed jalapenos today......

First of all, you cut them in half and scrape out all the seeds. While doing so I tended to breath in the very spicy jalapeno air, which made me cough, sneeze, and drink lots of water. Then it somehow got into my eye, which made my eyes water like crazy. There I was cutting jalapenos while coughing, gulping, sneezing, and crying. After I was completely done I washed my hands VERY well with soap and water--twice! And then my hands caught on fire. I swam with Leah, thinking that the water would help, but still my hands burned and burned. I washed my hands.... I stathered aloe vera on them, and it helped! For only about 5 seconds. Then I washed them once again--VICTORY at LAST!!!

I can't wait to eat these dangerous peppers for supper, I'm ready to cry, sneeze, cough, and burn again!

(Actually, hopefully they won't be that hot, since they're baked and stuffed with cream cheese, bacon bits, and other goodness!)

I haven't posted in forever!

We got home from RYC Friday night...at 11:00 PM! I had SO much fun, and I met some great friends. I miss them already! I absolutely can't wait for next year because I will be able to stay in the bunk house! WHOO HOO! Our skit was great too. My part was to sing the chorus (Not by myself, thankfully!) it was called sweet violets. I found out that I memorized the whole thing without knowing! I guess I heard it so many times that it stuck :D.

It is eight days until my 13th birthday! :) :)

When we found out we were going to Seaside, we were all SO excited! I helped Leah make a little journal where she drew pictures of seashells and sand toys, and we both make seashell bags for all the kids! I did the appliqueing, and Leah did most of the straights seams, I did a few though! I think they turned out pretty cute!

When I said we took tons of pictures, I guess I should have rephrased that to "We took tons of videos" LOL! I think we took a total of 6 pictures, and lots more videos. I only posted one picture because the other ones Olivia is in, and at the moment I do not have her permission to post them :). We had SO much fun crocheting, and mainly talking and laughing. It seems like that is the most fun to do with friends! Laugh!!!!!

Babysitting!!!

Ok, first of all, I do have my camera back :)! But I'll have to post pictures later because I haven't put them on the computer yet!

So yesterday Olivia and I had our much anticipated babysitting debut!!! She little six-month-old baby we kept was named Sarah. She was adorable, and a butterball! She was a wonderful, wonderful baby! Sarah did not cry once. She sucked her pacifier the entire time. Except for when she was fed her bottle, and when she laughed! Since it has been 3 years since Sam was a baby, Olivia and I were kind of lost....we didn't know how to entertain this very content and happy baby!! So we read her a book, sang the book to her, and boinged. LOL. One of us would hold her in our laps and let her 'boing' while the other sat in front of her making faces or talking to her. After all that Sarah was tired! So I walked around and she fell asleep. I attempted to put her in her bed, but I was in an awkward position so before she was in the bed she awoke. So I just sat with her in the rocking chair and she fell asleep with no problems! Babysitting was SO much fun and I hope we can do it again soon!

Here are some just random things that have been happening around here!

Wednesday Olivia and I weeded our VERY weedy garden, and overturned all the soil. After watering it, it looked like a new garden!

Yesterday we went to the dentist in Memphis, then we ran a 4 mile race called Zoom Through the Zoo. I found out that I don't need braces! I'm very excited about that!!! The race was hot, and there were some big hills! I didn't have my best time for 4 miles, but I guess it was ok! I'm not sure of my offical time, but it was either 30:59 or a second or two below!

Today I get to babysit someone who is not my siblings for the first time! Olivia and I are both going, and I am very excited!!!!

Friday night my best friend, Leslie, came over and spent the night so she could come with us to the Woodall Dash the next day! We took tons of pictures and had a TON of fun!!! After the race we went to Aunt Jenny's house for Grace's birthday party. I left my camera there, so I can't post pictures at the moment! Aunt Jenny, Seth, and Grace are coming Friday though, so I'll have to post them then!!!

I just wanted a reason to post, so here is a book report I did for school. It's a VERY good book so I recommend you read it!!!

After the Dancing Days
Critique by Julie Johnson

After the Dancing Days is a historical fiction book written by a very talented author, Margaret I. Rostkowski. It is put together with two hundred sixteen pages and 30 chapters. This wonderful story would mostly appeal to children ages 10 and up.

Annie's father is finally coming back from the war! Annie was very happy but also a little confused and sad. What will happen to her and her mother's mornings alone and their long talks together? With the war over and her beloved Uncle Paul dead, Annie doesn't know what to think. Before she knew it, Annie's father's train comes up. He was a doctor in World War 1. Annie was shocked at all the wounded men pouring out of the train, one man barely had a face, and another wouldn't stop shaking. Her strong father stepped out of the train to greet his family, but Annie couldn't forget the men she saw.

A few days after Annie's father returned home Annie decided that she wanted to visit some men at St. John's with her Grandfather. He read Ivanhoe to a blind boy named Timothy at St. John's. "No." Annie's mother immediately answered. Finally Annie's Father talked her into letting her go. As soon as Annie arrived, she almost wished she hadn't gone in the first place. She sat down on a bench with her book bag to look up and see a man. He looked very sad, and he didn't have much of a face. Annie wanted to run away but she knew that would be rude, so she sat there. Finally she got up and ran. But she forgot her beloved books in her book bag! Bravely, Annie retrieved her book bag. Soon Annie found herself going to St. John's again to see this young man. As she got more acquainted with him, she found out that his name was Andrew Crayton and his face was hurt by terrible gases. Annie grew closer and closer to this young man.
One day Annie's mother stopped by and immediately pulled Annie away and rushed her home. She wanted to know why in the world was Annie spending time with this deformed man?! Annie tried to explain to her how that was not really Andrew, he was hurt by the war! Annie's mother forbade her to go back. But Annie's grandfather got very sick and he had to take a vacation to the mountains to convalesce. Although her conscience told her not to, Annie continued to visit her new friend Andrew. Days went by and Andrew's face looked better and better. Annie's mother came home unexpectedly and Annie confessed everything. Annie's mother forgave everything and even invited Andrew to dinner. Before she knew it, Annie had to say goodbye to Andrew. She knew it was for the better though, and waved goodbye to her friend.

After the Dancing Days is a fantastic story about World War I. I would highly recommend it, you can have fun learning about the World War I. Beware, because if this book is picked up, it will not be put down until it is finished!

Mama cross stitched a lot before she had us, and I love looking through all the things she made!
Right now I'm making two geese with the words "Waddle I do without you?"
My favorite color is purple, but I think everyone knows that!

We planted tomatoes, strawberries, jalapenos, cilantro, sweet basil, onions, and broccoli

Olivia had one too, we all shared them, and they were YUMMY!!!
Clay and I have been swimming a lot already
We love to play Marco Polo and see who can get all the pool toys the fastest!
It's also a lot of fun to make up silly jumps, like the popcorn jump!

I was born at 12:11 A.M. Mama said it took her a little while to figure out if my birthday was on the 11th (when she went to the hospital) or on the 12th. It's the 12th!

Cooking Tips from Mama

I love cooking or baking with Mama, because I always learn something new. Tonight I learned how to make delicious pimento and cheese sandwiches. I've made it a few times before, but I had already forgotten some of the ingredients. Here's the recipe!

(none of this is exact, except the cheese. I'm sure everyone has different amounts and ingredients they use!)

1 block grated cheese
A shake of Worcestershire
a tiny bit of red pepper
about 1/2 cup mayonnaise
A couple of shakes of onion powder
Mix up, and serve on bread or crackers, YUMMY!!!

I also learned that when you are going to refrigerate your sandwiches, put a damp cloth over them before covering them with plastic wrap!

Last night was Spirit night at Chick-fil-a. 20% of the money went to BMC where our XC coach is their coach too! The BMC ram dressed up so he and the Chick-fil-a cow went to the road to get people to come! Soon a lot of our friends were up there too! Everyone loved the ram, here are some pictures!!!

A Strength Workout

You just got done running five grueling miles, but no, you’re not done yet!!! The schedule says “Strength Workout #2.” What?! By taking one look at the list of exercises, you know it is going to be a long 15-20 minutes--Dive Bomber Push-ups! After struggling through a measly ten push ups (the number is measly, not the actually push up!) it’s time for shoulder raises. You do one raise and debate with yourself, should you just use these three pound weights, or go get a can of vegetables from upstairs which is probably lighter? No, you’re a Spartan so you can BOW UP and do it. Doing round one three times can wear you out, but guess what! You still have two more rounds!

Decline push-ups…why?! You arms and abs are killing you as you’re trying so hard to breathe through 20 painful push-ups. Don’t put up the chair yet! It’s time for the brutal chair dips! Fifteen torturous dips leave your arms shaking and feeling like jello. Next it’s time for chair pose. When you see the description, you just think your arms are getting a rest, until you’re 15 seconds into the pose with your arms reaching up to the sky! Two more times through round two, and only one round left! YES!

It only takes a few words to get you scared- Heart to Heart push ups. Oh, the pain and torture! Whew, once you are done with that you move on to squatting concentration curls. There are things much harder and much easier than these, but at least they are better than those Heart to Hearts! So, once you have completed your strength workout, you feel good. Maybe a little sore, but that is the “hurt so good” feeling!

Why I love this book!!!

2. They're all the same size, so you can mix and match all you want

3. It shows you BEAUTIFUL patterns for afghans

4. After each pattern for a block, it suggests other blocks to match with it

5. It has an introductory chapter about colors and inspiration for some really neat designs!

So, yes it took all my Christmas money, and yes I highly, highly recommend it!!!!!

My Week

Wow, I haven't posted in a while! Anyway, here's what I've been doing! I'll start with last Tuesday

Tuesday- Since we weren't on Spring break this week we did school. At XC practice we were freezing but we warmed up as soon as we did some intense strength and core training! We also ran 4 miles which was very enjoyable, because I got to talk to Tiny the whole time

Wednesday- School again, and church. We didn't do much except that. Oh, and we watched American Idol!

Thurday- After school we went to Chickasaw trails and ran six miles with Mrs. Heather! It was a lot of fun because I love running on the trails. After that we went to Hobby Lobby, one of my favorite stores!!

Friday- Friday was Clay's first sleep over birthday party! You can read more about it on Mama's blog, (it's on my side bar, Joyful Always) I know that he invited five boys and they went to sleep at 3:00 a.m. and got up and 5:00 a.m. Olivia and I spent the night with our good friend Anna Beth! We went to eat at Newks, baked cookies, and watched Up! Also we stayed up late talking, like any other sleep over!

Saturday- As soon as we came home from Anna Beth's house I ran four miles and got ready to go to John Ashford's birthday party, one of Sam's friends. About two hours after John Ashford's party it was Ana's party, who is my age. Olivia and I just stayed with Ana. Guess what we did? We watched Veggie Tales!!! LOL.

Sunday- We all went to church, and other than that I just crocheted!

Monday- Six miles on the treadmill...or as Danielle says it, the "deadmill". Olivia, Clay, and I had piano lessons.

So there's my week! I have some pictures of Anna Beth's house but I might post those later.
Today is XC practice!!!!!! Hurrah! I have a feeling that it will be very hard because tomorrow we are supposed to do a 2 mile recovery run...........

Granny Square Tutorial!!!

I have always wanted to make a granny square tutorial because I think you would be able to learn more easily with pictures...so here it is!

First, I have a tutorial on double crochet, just in case you didn't know (this is for you, Danielle!)

Yarn over, and put your hook in the stitch
Pull up a loop (yarn over and pull it through the stitch) then repeat that. Ta da! you did a double crochet!

To start a granny square you chain six

And slip stitch it together to make a ring

Chain three and do two double crochets inside the ring, not into the chain.

chain 2 and do three double crochets, this is a cluster

Repeat that 2 more times, chain 2 and join it with a slip stitch

Now for corners! Do one cluster, chain 2, and another cluster in each corner.

This is what it should look like when you've done all the corners. To make it bigger you just keep on going! On the side do one cluster, and on the corners do two.

I hope this helps anyone who wanted to make a granny square!!!

The rules are to thank the person who gave the award and write seven random facts about myself that you may not know. Then, I tag seven people that I think should recieve this award!

1. I am TERRIFIED of snakes. Once I was riding my bike and I was going too fast to slow down, and I ran over a snake. I couldn't help screaming so Clay sped up to see what happened, running over the snake too. Also once Clay and I were about to go in the woods when Clay thought he saw a snake. I slowly backed away to get away from the snake, if there was one, and I almost stepped on it!!!!!!! It was very scary!

2. I cannot read directions. I just got to where I can read crochet patterns, if the directions are written simply. I have to be told something to understand it, or I can learn if I see it. Once we got a new game and since I was the one who read the directions, we played the game the wrong way the whole time!

3. A week ago I got contacts! I have had glasses for over a year and they were starting to bother me a lot when I ran....so I just got contacts! The first few times it took me about 3 minutes at maximum, but now I can put them in very easily! They were SO nice to run in for the half marathon!

4. I do NOT like bubblegum. I cannot stand the taste or smell of it.

5. I have taken four years of piano and this is my fifth. I just got my recital pieces for this year! The recital isn't until May. I do NOT like recitals, but I love my recital pieces! My pieces are "Spinning Song" and "Blue Danube". Recitals make you too nervous!!

6. I don't know why I didn't post this on the tag when it asked what your pet peeve was, but mine is jackets. Yesterday it was really cold and Daddy wanted to take mine and Olivia's picture but I didn't take a jacket!

7. I have slept alone very few times in my life. When I was younger every single night I got in Mama and Daddy's bed, and now I either sleep with Olivia or Leah. I don't sleep with Leah very often though. Olivia and I take turns who's bed we sleep in!

Half Marathon!!!

This morning I got up at 5:30 and went to Oxford to run a half marathon! It was COLD to start out, but I actually got warm in the middle. There were HILLS. KILLER HILLS. The worst one was at the finish. It was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO hilly. I ran with Daddy and my goal was to break 1:57:54, which was my St. Jude half marathon time (2008) We started off with a big down hill (the same hill we had to run up to the finish!) I walked at a few of the water stations and I took a little bit of Gu at mile 7. I would have to say that the hardest parts were a steep downhill between the 21 and 13 mile mark and the last, awful, steep, long, killer hill!!! So I achieved my goal of breaking 1:57...I did 1:51:16!!! I'm very happy with my time!! Go to Mama's blog for pictures. I am SO SORE!!!

An Incredible Adventure

Let me take you on a wonderful adventure to San Francisco, California. San Francisco is the home to many famous sights and objects such as Muir Woods, Alcatraz, The Golden Gate Bridge, and beautiful scenery. In May/June 2009 my family took a vacation to San Francisco. I could write a whole book on all the great things in San Francisco, but the most interesting and most important things would be who went, what we did, and what we ate. So let me take you on an incredible adventure!

Our Uncle Russ and Aunt Megan accompanied us on our trip to San Francisco. Everyone was so happy they could come! Uncle Russ had been to San Francisco before, but Aunt Megan had never been there before, so she was excited. Leah, although she had been to San Francisco when she was three, was extremely excited because she didn’t remember much from her first trip. Sam was only one the first time he traveled to San Francisco so he didn’t remember much at all. He was also excited for Uncle Russ to be coming for he loved to talk to Uncle Russ. Olivia, fourteen, couldn’t wait to go to China town, and neither could I! Clay, who was ten, was probably most excited about getting lots of rocks on the beaches since he is a rock-hound. Mama was looking forward to running across the Golden Gate Bridge, and I think Daddy was excited about getting lots of neat pictures! I know we all looked forward to having a wonderful week to spend time with each other.

While in scenic San Francisco, we went to many fun places such as beaches, stores, The Golden Gate Bridge, and Muir Woods! When at the sea-shore we kept our jackets on because it was chilly, but soon we found ourselves taking them off. We would run, climb on the big rocks, and racing the waves to retrieve a pretty rock we spotted. Chinatown was a fun place for everybody. There was so much to see! You just had to go in one little shop to find all kinds of pretty fans, notebooks, purses, scarves, and little trinkets. Leah really enjoyed Chinatown because her favorite things are notebooks and miniature purses. Sam, who is very mischievous, got in trouble with the owners of the shop for acting wild! The Jelly Belly factory was a very interesting and delicious experience! Uncle Russ even tried the nasty beans, pencil shavings, and rotten egg! Muir Woods was beautiful, and a perfect place for pretty pictures! There were lots of trails to walk on, and huge, I mean huge trees! On one day of our vacation we ran across the Golden Gate Bridge. In all, it was approximately three miles. As I said earlier, I could write a whole book on all the wonderful things we did, such as seeing elephant seals, climbing up mountains, Sutro baths, and many other things, but that would take too long, so I’ll stop with that.

Eating in San Francisco was scrumptious! At Fisherman's Wharf, we had yummy clam chowder in sourdough bread bowls! We also had clam chowder in bread bowls at Bodins which is pronounces Bo-deens. The Jelly Belly factory had tons of fantastic jelly bean flavors. Free samples of every flavor you could imagine were offered, from delicious mocha bean to nasty skunk spray! For lunch the cafeteria served bean shaped hamburgers and pizza, which were very delicious as well as the yummy smiley face French fries. There were also many wonderful smells at the Jelly Belly factory such as grapefruit jelly beans when we walked through the tour. I think that Ghirardelli had the most wonderful smells of all! When you walked in you immediately smelled all the wonderful chocolaty smells. Watching the chocolate being made just made your mouth water even more for some chocolate! The Ghirardelli chocolate is amazing, and it was an extremely yummy experience in San Francisco! At Chinatown we ate Chinese food which was so much better than all the Chinese restaurant in our area, because it was made by the people in Chinatown. Overall, we had lots of great food in San Francisco!

In conclusion, San Francisco was a wonderful family vacation. Everyone found something they loved about San Francisco and we all had a wonderful time. The most important part about our trip was spending time with family and it didn't really matter where we went or what we did. San Francisco was definitely an incredible adventure!

Yesterday night was Keepers! Olivia and I sat in a room with some of our friends and just knitted and crocheted, while the younger group (Leah's group) baked some delicious bread! They let our group try some too, the bread was SO GOOD!! We ate it with home made grape jelly...YUM!!! After they baked the bread Leah and all her friends were running all over the gym playing tag! I remember when I was six, going to Keepers and I thought that the most fun part was running around playing tag after the activity! I haven't posted in a while so I just posted about Keepers! Adios for now!

Entertaining Leah and Sam...

...Or should I say Leah and Sam entertaining me? After I finished my school today Mama asked me to entertain Leah and Sam so she could help Olivia and Clay finish their school. They told me that they wanted to play in Leah's play kitchen, "Do you want to play restaurant?" I asked. "No, you are the sick granny in bed and we cook you food" was their answer. Ha ha ha!!! It was really funny what all they brought me in bed so I took some pics of it :).

This is the interesting soup Sam brought me-it consisted of corn, french fries, an onion ring, pizza, a brownie, and a hot dog to dip in the soup.

Scarf Pattern

Hey! This is a scarf pattern that I made up...it's really simple and not that impressive but I decided to post it anyway! I have some pictures of it first.

Materials-

H (5.00mm) hook

a light colored yarn

a dark colored yarn

Pattern-

Chain 134

1) double crochet in the fourth chain from the hook and to the end of the row, leave a long tail

2) change to dark yarn, single crochet in every stitch across

3) change yarn and repeat row 1

4-7) repeat rows 1 and 2

Cut the fringe however long you want it to be (actually cut it twice as long as you want it to be because you will fold it in half) get one or two strands of yarn and fold it in half. Put your hook in the edge of the scarf and catch the loop of yarn where you folded it in half. Wrap the loose ends of yarn around your hook and pull them through the other loops. If this is too confusing tell me in a comment and I'll be happy to post a picture tutorial! So if you understood that, continue it until you have as much fringe as you want!

Last night we spent the night with Kara Beth and Ashley...it was SO MUCH FUN!!! We went to Wal-Mart and we were just going to look around until Mrs. Pam called us, but we spotted the cutest little animals to paint! They were only 44 cents! We each picked out one but I didn't put the pics of those on here, maybe I will later. We rented Enchanted and I fell asleep before the movie was half over! (we started it at about midnight!) Here are some pics. The funniest ones are from this morning when we were "Movie Stars" and Kara B. was "Tanisha!" (K.B. tell me if I spelled it wrong!)

2009 is almost over! Today has been a fun day and we have more fun things coming up! Tonight a family from our church is coming over to eat supper, play games, and play the Wii! I'm very excited. For Christmas I got a gift card to Barnes and Noble and I also had some Christmas money, so we went to one of my favorite places!! I went strait to the craft books and after looking for a few minutes I found what I wanted!!! It was a crocheting book that showed how to make 212 different crochet squares and designs for afghans! The afghans are absolutly beautiful! Mama saw it and decided that she wanted to learn how to crochet and make an afghan. I'm going to make an afghan for my hope chest. It will be my second afghan! My two favorite squares so far are called "chocolate box" and "Queen Ann's lace" I'll try to post pictures of some squares I make! The next time I post it will be 2010!!!!!

I almost forgot about this story!!!

Today I turned in my poem to Ms. Carrie. I’ll write it in here later. I think she liked it! It made me very happy. I am very, very sad that she will not be teaching us again unless she decides to teach again after she has her baby, but I doubt that. At least until her child is old enough to go to school I doubt that. Well, I can’t wait to see what happens with Mr. David Monday!

Today is Saturday but Bethel has a cold and her mother won’t let her out of her room. I’m sure Bethel’s mother has a good reason for keeping her in her room but I can’t help but wish she could at least come into my room to talk. I’m so lonely right now. I guess I could read or write. Just a few days ago I said I couldn’t write a poem and now I love doing it!!! Since I’m so bored I guess I’ll write my poem in here, the one I wrote for school I mean.
(I didn’t write my inspiration for this poem when I wrote that I started it, but it was some really pretty kites I saw some boys flying!)*

Today Bethel was at church so I guess she’s better! After I finish writing this I’m going to see if she can come into my room. I’m half dreading tomorrow and half excited about it. Mr. David looked very nice but I don’t know if he will be tomorrow…I’m just kind of worried. Bethel is knocking on my door! Got to get going!!!

Today Mr. David started teaching us…He is SO nice!!! I’m so happy he’s not mean. He helped all the little kids with their new things and he was even nice to the really big boys! I still miss kind Mrs. Carrie, but I’m glad that Mr. David is nice. Bethel and I picked flowers again today and pressed some. We are going to make bookmarks with the pressed ones sometime. Wow, I haven't posted in a long time! I changed my background (again!) to the first Lee Lou one I had. I think it's my favorite one I've had! I'm definately going to keep it this way for a while. Right now I'm knitting a red and yellow ball from the knitting book I got for Christmas. It uses short rowing which can be difficult, but after doing it a few times I think I have the hang of it! Tomorrow we are going to a dessert party! I'm excited :). Like the title says, there's not much to say so I guess I'll go!!!

When Clay was three or four a lady from our church gave us some gingerbread ornaments that really smelled good! When we were decorating the tree Clay just couldn't resist that wonderful gingerbread smell...so he took a bite! Of course, they were just ornaments that smelled good and weren't edible so even though it smelled delicious, it tasted terrible! Clay got sick all over the tree (don't worry, we got a new tree) and every time he told the story he said "That was a wucky beaw!"
